Our working
Every item in the guide is below, with the document its answer rests on. Where no document covers a thing, we say so and show our own logic instead.
Most of this is not our opinion. The Solid Waste Management Rules, 2026 sort household waste into four streams and say what goes in each. For a banana peel there is nothing to decide.
Three things make it harder. Some items have their own rule book, like a battery or a tube light. Some are fine as a material but not in the state they are in, like an oily box. And some are covered by nothing at all.
For the last group we work it out from the four definitions and mark it as ours. You are free to disagree with those, and the feedback button in the guide reaches a person.
One line beats all of this. Rule 5(1)(b) ends by saying you hand waste over "as per the direction or notification by the local authorities from time to time". If your city asks for something else, do what your city asks.
All 116 of them. Each shows the bins it can end up in and the document behind its answer. Turn on the reasoning to see how we got there.
Tier 1 is official: a government notification or a regulator's guideline. Tier 2 is a serious second-hand source. Tier 3 is published research. An answer that rests only on tier 2 is put more softly in the guide.
